Binaural Beats

A binaural beat is an auditory illusion created when a pure tone is isolated to one ear, and a tone of a different pitch is presented to the other ear; the brain mixes the two tones and cancels out opposing frequencies to produce a beat at the rate of the difference between the pitch frequencies. A tone with a pitch of 185 Hz to one ear and another tone at 195 Hz to the other ear will produce a beat at a rate of 10 Hz. This beat only exists in the mind and has a wave depth of about 3db. They sound more like a wavering drone rather than a well-pronounced beat. This doesn’t impact the brain strong enough to trigger the frequency following response, so binaural beats do not produce entrainment.

They promote hemispheric synchronization as they require both sides of the brain to work together. This is probably why BBs are hypnotic to listen to and can lead to altered states of consciousness. Many people mistakenly refer to all BWE sessions as “binaural beats,” leading to confusion and false information.
